英Economist誌の日本特集は「Japain」

TEN years ago Japan was on the point of financial and economic meltdown, with a political establishment utterly incapable of facing up to the crisis. Those Japanese who cared coined a not altogether pleasing English phrase: "Japan passing", implying not only that the world's second biggest economy was being passed by in a fast-changing world, but also that Japan could no longer even be taken seriously. A headline in The Economist at the time tried to sum up the situation more pithily: "Japan's amazing ability to disappoint".

　英エコノミスト誌は「陽はまた沈む」という特集を組み、日本経済の没落を予言し、最近は「陽はまた昇る」という特集で日本経済の復活を告げた。しかし、日本の勢いは続かなかった。エコノミストが再び、日本経済に対して警鐘を鳴らしている。今週はアジアを除き表紙はカストロの引退なのだが、アジア版は日本特集。タイトルは「Japan's pain: Why Japan keeps failing」。表紙では「Japan」にもう一つ一本「i」の字が書き込まれ、「Japain」となっている。「ja-pain」である。今回の混沌の責任は政治、官僚機構を制御できない政治、党利党略で的確な政策を打てない政治ーー政治が日本を奈落に引きずり込む。エコノミストは“戦犯”として安倍前首相、福田首相、小沢民主党代表をあげる。　しかし、落ちたとはいえ、いまだに世界2位の経済大国。打てる手もあるだろうに、無為無策のまま自滅していくというのも哀しいものがある。落ち続けていく日本。ここまでくれば、総選挙なのかもしれない。混乱するという声もあるが、ここまで来れば、失うものもない。というか、このまま時間を失うよりも、決着をつけたほうがいいんじゃないだろうか。
