チャールトン・ヘストンが死去

Charlton Heston, who appeared in some 100 films in his 60-year acting career but who is remembered chiefly for his monumental, jut-jawed portrayals of Moses, Ben-Hur and Michelangelo, died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 83. His death was confirmed by a spokesman for the family, Bill Powers, who declined to discuss the cause. In August 2002, Mr. Heston announced that he had been diagnosed with neurological symptoms “consistent with Alzheimer’s disease.”

　「猿の惑星」「ベン・ハー」「十戒」などなど、古代から未来に至るまでヒーローが似合う人だった。でも、「ボウリング・フォー・コロンバイン」では、全米ライフル協会の会長として登場。これは幻滅だった。過去と未来に生きた人で、現代は似合わなかったのかも。で、ふっと考えてみると、ヘストンの現代映画って、頭に浮かんでこないなあ。やっぱり過去か、未来か、虚構の世界が似合った人だったんだなあ。極めてハリウッド的、古典的ハリウッド的な人だったのかも。ニューヨーク・タイムズの追悼記事を読むと、晩年はアルツハイマーだったのか。合掌。
